How to Store Your Surfboard at Home: Wall Mount vs Rack vs Floor
A surfboard left leaning against a wall is a surfboard waiting to fall. A board laid flat on the floor is a board waiting to be stepped on. Proper storage protects the deck, the rails, and the fins — and keeps your living space functional. Here are the three main options and when each one makes sense.
Option 1 — Wall Mount (Recommended for Most Surfers)
Wall mounts are the most practical storage solution for the majority of surfers, whether you live in a flat, a house, or a shared apartment. They use vertical wall space — the most abundant space in most homes — and keep your board completely off the floor.
- Uses vertical wall space — the most abundant space in most homes and apartments
- Board is off the floor, out of the way, and actually looks good as a display piece
- Neoprene padding protects the rails and deck from pressure dings at every contact point
- Multiple styles available: vertical tip-down (minimal wall footprint), horizontal single-board, horizontal multi-board for quivers
- Permanent installation required — but only 2–4 screws into a stud or wall anchor
Best for: surfers with limited floor space, those who want a tidy and displayable storage solution, and anyone with more than one board.
Pros: space-efficient, board-safe, looks great on the wall, lowest long-term cost per board stored.
Cons: requires drilling; position is fixed once mounted. Read our step-by-step installation guide to see how straightforward the process is.
Option 2 — Freestanding Rack
A freestanding rack is a floor-standing unit that holds one or multiple boards upright or at an angle. No drilling is required, which makes it a popular choice for renters or for spaces where wall mounting is not possible.
- No drilling required — simply place it and load your boards
- Relocatable — move it between rooms or take it with you when you move house
- Floor footprint required — typically 60–80 cm × 40 cm minimum, which adds up in small rooms
- Good for garages, surf sheds, and rental situations where mounting into walls is not permitted
- Less stable than wall mounts in narrow or busy spaces — boards can tip if bumped
Best for: garages and sheds, rental situations where drilling is not allowed, and temporary setups.
Pros: no drilling needed, movable.
Cons: floor space required, less stable in tight spaces.
Option 3 — Floor Storage (Not Recommended)
Floor storage means the board is laid flat, propped in a corner, or leaned against a wall without proper support. It costs nothing to set up — but it introduces several problems that shorten the life of your board.
- Leaning against a wall puts constant pressure on the rail at the contact point, causing dings and pressure dents over time
- Flat on the floor risks fin box damage, especially if anyone walks nearby and accidentally kicks the board
- Trip hazard — a board on the floor is a hazard in any living space
- Fin damage from hard floors is one of the most common results of floor storage, particularly if the board shifts or topples
Best for: nobody. Even a €25.95 vertical wall mount is a better long-term investment for your board than leaving it on the floor.
Quick Comparison Table
| Option | Space Used | Board Safety | Installation | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wall Mount | Wall only | Excellent | 2–4 screws | €25.95+ |
| Freestanding Rack | Floor footprint | Good | None | €40–120 |
| Floor/Leaning | Floor | Poor | None | €0 |

FAQ
Can I store my SUP board on a wall mount?
Yes — use the GNARWALL Horizontal SUP Wall Rack (€39.95), which is specifically designed for the width and weight of both inflatable and hardboard SUPs.
Will a wall mount damage my board's finish?
No — all GNARWALL mounts use neoprene padding on the contact points. Neoprene is soft, non-abrasive, and will not react with surf wax or board finishes.
How many boards can I store on one horizontal multi-board rack?
The GNARWALL Horizontal Multi-Board Rack stores up to 6 boards depending on board width.
