Most paddlers put their boards away when the air temperature drops, and that's a shame. Winter paddling on empty lakes, fog-covered rivers and crisp morning water is a different experience entirely — quieter, more meditative, often more beautiful. With the right preparation, it's also completely safe. Here's how to keep paddling when the seasons change.
The Real Risk: Cold Water, Not Cold Air
The biggest danger in winter SUP isn't being cold on the board — it's falling into cold water. Cold water immersion causes rapid heat loss and, in severe cases, cold water shock. This is why the paddling community's golden rule in cold conditions is: dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.
If the water is below 10°C, you should be wearing a wetsuit capable of keeping you functional if you fall in. A 4/3mm wetsuit with gloves and booties is a reasonable minimum for most European conditions in winter. Add a hood when temperatures drop further. For a full guide on wetsuit selection for cold-water paddling, see our Cold Water Wetsuit Guide for Winter Sessions. Adjusting Your Fin Setup for Winter Conditions
Winter often means paddling different water. Rivers run faster, lakes develop currents from temperature gradients, and wind patterns change. Two fin adjustments are worth considering:
If you're paddling rivers or semi-shallow winter waterways, switch to a river fin. Cold water makes rigid fins more brittle and impact-resistant materials even more important. A flexible river fin that bends on impact is significantly safer in winter conditions than a rigid fin that snaps cleanly. For more on river-specific paddling technique and equipment, read our River SUP: A Beginner's Guide to Paddling on Moving Water.
For flat-water winter touring where stability and warmth matter, a classic all-round SUP fin or touring fin remains the right choice — good tracking, minimal fuss, works well even at slower winter pacing. Cold-Weather Paddle Technique
Cold air affects your body even when you don't fall in. Grip strength and fine motor control decline as your hands get cold. Paddle gloves or neoprene mitts make a significant difference on long sessions. Warm up before you paddle — a few minutes of movement on shore means you start with warm muscles rather than cold ones.
Shorten your sessions relative to summer. Two hours in 5°C air with water at 7°C is genuinely taxing. Know when to call it and warm up in the car — pushing too long in cold conditions is how good days turn bad.
Board Care in Winter
Cold temperatures can affect inflatable SUP boards — boards inflated at room temperature may lose some pressure as the air inside cools. Always check your pressure before launching in winter and add a few PSI if needed.
Store your board somewhere that won't freeze. Extreme cold can damage valves and seams on inflatable boards. A garage or utility room is ideal — it doesn't need to be warm, just above freezing.
Winter SUP Spots Around Munich
The Munich area has some excellent winter paddling options for those willing to brave the cold. From the Isar river to the surrounding lakes, there's no shortage of beautiful water even in the colder months. For a full rundown of the best spots, see our guide to Top 7 SUP Places Around Munich. The current Eisbach water temperature is always worth checking before you head out — the river runs cold and fast in winter.
The Reward
Winter paddlers know something summer paddlers don't: the water is yours. Empty rivers, uncrowded lakes, wildlife that's visible in the stripped-back winter landscape. The conditions require more preparation, but the payoff in solitude and scenery is real.
