What to Pack for a Multi-Country SUP Road Trip: The Complete Checklist
It's 6 a.m., the car is loaded, and you're an hour into the drive before you realise the fin key is still sitting on the kitchen counter in Munich. On a multi-country trip — river, lake, and ocean, three sets of shops that may or may not be open on a Sunday — that's not a small problem. Here's what actually needs to be in the car before you leave, organised by the moment you'll need it.
SUP Roadtrip Packliste: 1. Fin Hardware — the Easiest Thing to Forget
Fins are the one part of the setup that changes at every stop on a multi-water route, which means the tools to swap them get used constantly — and constant use is exactly how small hardware goes missing.
- Fin key. Pack it in the same bag as the fins, not loose in a door pocket where it'll slide under a seat by day two.
- Spare screws. A dropped screw on a gravel car park is gone for good, and no small-town shop between Achensee and the coast stocks SUP fin screws on a Sunday.
- The fins themselves, labelled. If you're carrying a river, touring, and standard fin in one bag, a strip of tape with the water type on each one saves fumbling at 6 a.m.
2. Transport — What Actually Keeps the Board on the Roof
Nine hours of Alpine motorway and Brenner Pass switchbacks put more stress on straps than a weekend trip to the lake ever will, so this is not the place to reuse the strap that's been living in the garage since last summer.
- Straps rated for highway speed, checked for fraying before departure, not after the first fuel stop.
- A spare strap. One failing at 130 km/h on the A13 is the scenario you're packing a spare to avoid.
- Padding at every contact point between board and roof rack — cheap foam blocks cost less than a single ding repair.
3. Documents — Ready Before You Need Them, Not After
A route through Austria, Italy, and France means everyone in the car needs identification within reach, not buried under gear in the trunk while a border officer waits.
- Valid passport or national ID for every passenger, kept in the glovebox or a door pocket — somewhere reachable without unpacking anything.
- Vehicle registration and insurance documents, printed or downloaded for offline access in case a mountain pass has no signal.
- Austria's vignette, bought online and linked to your plate before you cross the border, not queued for at a service station.
4. Repair & Backup — for the Things You Can't Predict
Shallow river gravel, a hot car park, and a full week of daily use is a realistic way to find a leak or a loose fitting you didn't know you had.
- A basic repair kit for inflatable boards — patches and glue take up almost no space and turn a trip-ending leak into a ten-minute fix.
