SUP Fin Quick Lock vs US Box: Which System to Get
You just ordered a new SUP fin online — excited to upgrade your setup — only to realise when it arrives that the fin box on your board is a completely different system. It happens more often than it should. The two dominant fin mount standards for stand-up paddleboards, Quick Lock (also called Slide-In or Click-In) and US Box, are not compatible with each other. Knowing which one your board uses before you buy saves you the hassle of returns and gets you on the water faster.
The Two Systems at a Glance
Both systems do the same job — lock a fin securely to the underside of your board — but they go about it in very different ways. Here is what sets them apart.
US Box
The US Box (Universal System Box) has been the industry standard for decades. It consists of a long rectangular slot — typically 25 cm / 10 inches — moulded into the hull of the board. The fin base has a T-shaped head that slides into the track, and a single screw clamps it in place. You can slide the fin forwards or backwards along the track to fine-tune your trim before locking it down.
- Adjustable position: Slide the fin anywhere along the 10-inch track for trim tuning
- Tool required: A fin key (small hex key) to tighten the screw
- Universal compatibility: The vast majority of inflatable and hardboard SUPs use US Box
- Extremely durable: Few moving parts, nothing to break
- Slightly slower: Takes 30–60 seconds to install or remove
Quick Lock (Slide-In / Click-In)
Quick Lock is the modern, tool-free alternative found on boards from brands like Red Paddle Co, Jobe, and various other iSUP manufacturers. The fin base has a flat tab that slots into a shorter, purpose-built channel and locks with a spring-loaded clip or a simple thumb screw. No fin key required — you can swap fins in seconds.
- Tool-free: Install or remove in under 10 seconds, no hardware needed
- Fixed position: The fin sits in one defined spot — no fore/aft adjustment
- Brand-specific: Not all Quick Lock systems are interchangeable between manufacturers
- Great for travel: Fast setup at the water's edge, nothing to lose
- Limited fin selection: Fewer aftermarket options compared to US Box
How to Identify Which System Your Board Uses
Flip your board over and look at the fin box near the tail. Here is what to look for:
- Long rectangular slot (~25 cm): US Box. You will likely also see a small screw hole at one end of the slot.
- Short slot with a plastic clip or notch: Quick Lock. The channel is usually 8–12 cm long and has a visible locking mechanism.
- Check your board's manual or product page: Manufacturers list the fin system in the specs. Search "[your board name] fin box type" if you no longer have the manual.
- Look at the fin that came with the board: A fin with a long T-shaped base = US Box. A fin with a short flat tab and a spring pin = Quick Lock.

Which System Should You Choose?
The honest answer: you do not choose — your board chooses for you. Buy the fin that matches your board's existing fin box. That said, if you are in the market for a new board and fin system compatibility matters to you, here is what to keep in mind:
- Choose US Box if you want the widest possible fin selection, the ability to fine-tune trim, or if you paddle on rivers and need a flexible fin option.
- Choose Quick Lock if speed of setup is your top priority and you own a board that uses the system — it genuinely is faster, and for casual touring or flat-water paddling the fixed position is no disadvantage at all.

A Note on Screws and Fin Keys
If you are using a US Box fin, you will need a fin key and the right screw. Most Eisbach Riders US Box fins come with a screw included, but if you ever lose one — and they are easy to drop at the water's edge — our SUP Fin Screw Set (2-pack) has you covered. We also carry a Fin Key & Screws combo if you need both.
The Bottom Line
Quick Lock and US Box are both reliable, proven systems — the difference is convenience versus flexibility. Quick Lock wins on speed of setup; US Box wins on the breadth of fin options and adjustability. Check your board's fin box, match the system, and pick the fin shape that suits your paddling style. If you are ever in doubt, browse the full SUP fin collection — every product listing clearly states which system it fits.
