FCS Rapid Sets: What's Included and Who Are They For?
You've just picked up a new surfboard — or maybe you're dialling in an existing one — and you want fins that actually work together as a system. Not a pair of sides you grabbed off the rack and a centre fin you ordered separately hoping the flex and rake would roughly match. That's where the FCS Rapid Surfing Set comes in: everything in the box is designed to work as one, so you spend less time second-guessing your setup and more time in the water.
What's in the FCS Rapid Surfing Set?
The FCS Rapid Surfing Set is a thruster combo: two side fins plus one centre knubster, all sharing the same Rapid template. The set uses FCS double-tab fin boxes (also called FCS I), which are the most common legacy box found on surf and river wave boards.
The Rapid side fins are a versatile all-rounder template — moderate rake, balanced foil — designed to generate drive without being stiff or twitchy. They work in both ocean surf and standing river waves. The Rapid Knubster is the centre piece: a small, upright trailer fin that sits in the middle box and provides the pivot point the thruster needs without adding drag or locking you into a fixed line.
The knubster format is specifically suited to river wave surfing. On a river wave, you're stationary relative to the wave, so you don't need the deep centre fin that ocean surfers use for down-the-line speed. The knubster keeps you loose and manoeuvrable — critical when you're spinning, pressing nose, or working a tight pocket.

Complete Set vs. Buying Fins Individually — Which Is Right for You?
The answer depends on what you already own and how you want to experiment.
Buy the complete FCS Rapid Surfing Set if:
- You're setting up a board from scratch and need a matched thruster configuration
- You want the side fins and knubster to share the same flex, foil, and template for consistent feel
- You'd rather spend one decision and be done — the set saves you around €2 vs buying sides and centre separately
- You're new to surfing or river surfing and don't yet have a reference point for what individual fin combinations feel like
Buy the side fins and knubster individually if:
- You already have one piece you're happy with — for example, you have a knubster you love and just want new sides
- You want to mix templates — pairing Rapid sides with a different centre fin for a specific feel
- You're building a spare kit and only need to replace one component
- You ride twin-fin setups and only need the two FCS Rapid side fins without a centre
For most surfers stepping into their first proper fin setup, the complete set is the cleaner choice. For intermediate and advanced riders who know their preferences, buying à la carte gives more control.
Sizing Guide: Medium vs. Small
The FCS Rapid Set and the standalone Rapid Knubster both come in two sizes. Choosing the right one matters more than most people expect — an undersized fin on a wider board will feel loose and unpredictable, while an oversized fin on a shorter board kills flow and makes the tail feel sticky.
FCS Rapid Surfing Set — Medium
- Recommended for: surfers roughly 70–90 kg, or anyone on a board over 6'2" / wider than 20"
- Feel: more drive and hold, better for powerful river waves and steeper faces
- River use: ideal for the Eisbach and similar high-power standing waves
FCS Rapid Surfing Set — Small
- Recommended for: surfers under 70 kg, or anyone on a shorter / narrower board
- Feel: lighter, snappier response, easier to pivot and spin
- River use: great for smaller, mellower standing waves or lightweight riders who want quick release
FCS Rapid Knubster — Sizing
The knubster sizing follows the same logic. If you're running Medium side fins, pair them with the Medium Rapid Knubster. Mixing a Small knubster with Medium sides (or vice versa) can create an imbalanced pivot — the fins won't share the same load as intended.
When in doubt, go with the size that matches your body weight rather than trying to size up for more hold. The Rapid template already provides solid drive at both sizes; the weight guide is the more reliable selector.
FCS I vs. FCS II — A Quick Note
The FCS Rapid Set uses the original FCS double-tab (FCS I) system — the two-screw box that's been the standard on surf and river boards for decades. If your board has the newer FCS II plug-in boxes, these fins won't fit directly. You have two options: look for FCS II-compatible fins, or pick up an FCS II to FCS I Adapter (€7.95) to run the Rapid fins in FCS II boxes. The adapter adds zero meaningful play and is a clean solution if you want to use your existing fins on a newer board.
Ready to Set Up Your Board?
The FCS Rapid Surfing Set is one of the best-value complete fin setups for river and beach surf — a matched thruster in one purchase, available in the size that fits your weight and board. If you already have sides or a knubster you trust, the standalone pieces let you fill in the gap without paying for what you don't need.
