Best Surf Fins Under €100: FCS, Futures & US Box Picks

Surf fins are not a place to spend a lot of money until you know exactly what you want. The difference between a €20 fin and a €60 fin is real — but it matters far less than whether the fin fits your board and suits your surfing. Most surfers, at most levels, are better served by a solid mid-range set than by chasing premium carbon.

This guide covers the best options under €100, organised by fin system, so you can find what works for your board without overspending.

Know Your System First

Before buying any fins, confirm which system your board takes. The three main systems are not compatible:

  • FCS (double-tab / FCS I): Two plugs pushed into the board, secured with a grub screw. The most common system on boards made before 2014 and on many budget boards today.
  • FCS II: Tool-free — fins click in and out without a key. Compatible with FCS I boxes using an adapter. Common on boards from 2014 onwards.
  • Futures (single-tab): One rectangular tab that slides into a slot, secured with one bolt. Very strong connection, popular with many premium shapers.

If you have FCS II boxes and want to use FCS I (double-tab) fins, an FCS II to FCS I adapter (€7.95) makes them compatible — a useful option if you already own a set of double-tab fins.

FCS Fins Under €100

FCS Thruster Set — €39.95

A complete three-fin set (two side fins + one centre knubster) for thruster setups. Fibreglass construction with a balanced flex pattern — performs well in a wide range of conditions from waist-high beach break to overhead point surf. The knubster centre fin is smaller than a standard centre, which suits surfers who want a looser feel without switching to a quad.

Best for: Everyday beach break, all-round shortboarding, intermediate to advanced surfers.

FCS Side Fins Only — €21.95

If you already have a centre fin and just need to replace or upgrade your side fins, the side fin pair is available separately. Useful when one fin is damaged or when you want to experiment with different side fin sizes without replacing the whole set.

FCS Centre Knubster — €19.95

The knubster is a smaller, rounded centre fin designed to loosen the back end of a thruster without going to a full quad setup. Particularly useful in small, gutless waves where a standard centre fin creates too much drag.

Futures Fins Under €100

Futures Thruster Set — €39.95

The single-tab Futures equivalent of the FCS thruster set above. Same fibreglass construction, same balanced all-round performance profile. The Futures box gives slightly more rigidity at the base connection, which some surfers feel translates to a little more drive and power through turns.

Best for: The same surfer as the FCS set — but whose board uses Futures boxes.

Futures Side Fins Only — €21.95

Side fin pair for Futures systems, available separately.

Futures Centre Knubster — €19.95

Same loosening effect as the FCS knubster, for Futures centre boxes.

Do You Need to Spend More?

For most recreational surfers, no. The performance difference between a fibreglass thruster set at €40 and a carbon set at €150 is noticeable only to experienced surfers actively working on their technique in quality surf. If you're surfing waist-to-head-high beach break a few times a month, spend the budget difference on more surf time instead.

Where spending more makes sense: if you're surfing overhead or heavier waves regularly, a stiffer fin with more hold is worth it. But even then, you can get excellent performance from mid-range sets well under €100.
